One never knows what’s in store. A healthy dose of planning today prevents a bad surprise tomorrow… A young friend recently said that it’s the often command-barking voice of her wheelchair-bound Baby Boomer father that dominates the relationship with his significant other, who is also his daily caregiver. She doubted he would ever need help speaking up! On the contrary, I suggested. As your father ages and his verbal and mental prowess begins to desert him, he is likely to find dependence even more frustrating than he probably finds it today. At that time, he will need perhaps even more than some others a resource on which he can rely to make known his needs, goals, feelings, and preferences, since he obviously has such strong values. Acknowledging that possibility and planning for such a day will make the prospect of its arrival less daunting.
